It took three hours for rescuers and veterinarians to release the poor prince.

Later, Miss Kirkman posted on the Internet: “I thought I would lose my horse. I have never been so scared.

“After three hours, four fire department teams and three veterinarians, we finally managed to drag him back to the wider part of the ditch and get him out.

“He was badly injured, but he is still alive.”

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We received an alert at 12:33 noon on Monday. There were reports that a horse was trapped in a ditch in Gidburgh.

The firefighters cooperated with the police to try to get the trapped animal to stand up again to rescue the trapped animal. “
