The 8 most common behavioral problems in dogs

5- Filthiness

The filthiness of the dog often pushes the owners to the limit. However, it is advisable to remain benevolent. Dogs generally do not have access to toilets when they wish throughout the day. However, making your needs is totally natural and everyone should be able to relieve themselves whenever he wants.

If your dog is messy overnight, it is very important to do a veterinary check to eliminate health problems. If no medical cause is found, try to determine the reason for the behaviour, which may be one of the following:

  • Emotion pee (the dog is too happy to see you again or on the contrary it causes him stress)
  • Olfactory message, marking often linked to frustration
  • Anxiety
  • Bad packaging (at breeding the puppy was made on concrete, so it does not understand that it should be done in the grass )
  • No learning
  • Sphincter still in formation (for puppies)
  • Physical inability to restrain (puppy up to about 6 months, illness, old age, poor nutrition, etc.)

In any case, the dog is not punished for his “mistakes”. We will teach him where to go. The best thing is to remain attentive. You have to take it out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up or getting excited. Congratulate him when it’s in the right place and take it out regularly. During your absences, you can restrict its space a little or close the doors of the rooms to avoid accidents everywhere in the house.

6- The Frustration

Mismanagement of dog frustration often leads to behaviour that is acceptable to humans. However, we must not forget, that this management of emotion is difficult and especially requires learning. If your dog mismanages his frustration he can:

  • Bark at you
  • Bite to discharge emotionally
  • Make urinary markings
  • Get excited easily
  • Do not listen to your directions

To help you understand and manage this frustration, read our article: Dog Frustration.

7- Predation in dogs

The dog being a carnivore, will naturally adopt behaviors related to hunting. This hunting can be done on animals, small dogs, but also on moving objects (ball, car, motorcycle) or on humans (bike, rollerblades, child, etc.).

Unchecked, this predation can be dangerous for the dog as for the others.

Although we cannot erase an instinct, we can “file” it in order to turn it to our advantage through basic education or sports activity. We can then:

  • Teach your dog the reminder
  • Always more positive our zone (the fact of staying next to us)
  • Be vigilant and why not use a lanyard to control the dog during delicate walks, which prevents it from strengthening
  • Avoid ball games, which encourages the dog to be drugged or to develop its skills in predation.
  • Meet the needs of the dog such as walking every day (even if there is a garden) at least half an hour when the dog is adult and healthy.
  • Do a sports activity such as treibball, cani-paddle, cani-cross, hooper, etc.

8- Jumping and being rude to humans

Jumping is a common behavior in dogs. Puppies get up to reach and interact with their mother. They will reproduce the same thing on their human family. Dogs can also jump when they are excited or looking for an object in the hands of its owner.

The first thing to do is to ignore your dog. This means that you should not talk to him, not look at him and especially not touch him. Move away if necessary, pretend it does not exist. Some dogs are insistent. You can then divert him on a toy, on treats or ask him to wait in an area like his basket (if however this was taught to him). As soon as your dog relaxes and calms down, reward him calmly by reconnecting.
